On 23 June 2022 H.E. Mr. Singtong Lapisatepun, Ambassador of Thailand to Japan, welcomed Mr. SAGAE Hiroji, President of Yamagata-Thailand Friendship Association and President of Yamagata Newspaper, along with his delegation. Mr. SAGAE also presented famous cherries of Yamagata Prefecture as a souvenir to the Ambassador.

The Ambassador and Mr. SAGAE agreed to jointly organise various activities to strengthen the relationship between Thailand and Yamagata Prefecture that may have reduced during the COVID-19 situation. They also wished to jointly promote Muay Thai to the people of Yamagata Prefecture and student exchange between the two sides.

The Ambassador encouraged the Association to push forward more relaxation of border measures that will enable Thai tourists and businesspeople to travel to Japan more conveniently. He also expressed his gratitude to Yamagata Prefecture for being a host town for Thai judo Olympic athletes, which helped promote warm friendship between Thailand and Yamagata.

The Association invited the Ambassador to visit Yamagata Prefecture. It also plans to work with other Thailand-Japan Friendship Associations in the Tohoku region to arrange charter flights between Sendai and Bangkok to strengthen relations with Thailand.

The Royal Thai Embassy has received cherries and Sakura branches as the souvenir from Yamagata every year, which is a symbol of continued friendly relations between Thailand and the Prefecture.
