A luncheon in honor of Professor Emeritus AKAGI Osamu, who played a leading role in the Thai-Japanese Dictionary Revision Project.

On September 14, 2023, H.E. Mr. Singtong LAPISATEPUN, the Ambassador of Thailand to Japan, hosted a luncheon as a gesture of gratitude in honor of Professor Emeritus AKAGI Osamu, former President of the Osaka University of Foreign Studies, and Mr. KITAYAMA Teisuke, Senior Advisor at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and President of the Japan-Thailand Association (JTA) and the Japan-Thailand Business Forum (JTBF). The luncheon was also attended by individuals involved in the Thai-Japanese Dictionary Revision Project.

The "Thai-Japanese Dictionary" is a trusted reference work for those learning Thai language, originally compiled by Professor Emeritus TOMITA Takejiro of Osaka University of Foreign Studies and first published in 1987. The dictionary has been relied upon by experts and learners of Thai language.

After 25 years since the release of the first edition, and the first volume is no longer available, it was deemed necessary to make the dictionary more user-friendly and update its content to align with the current era. With the support of the Japan-Thailand Association, Professor Emeritus AKAGI Osamu undertook the task of preparing a revised version. The revised edition, published by Mekong Publishing in May 2023, was a project, supported by the Embassy, to commemorate the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Thailand in 2017.

Ambassador Singtong expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all parties involved in the publication of the revised dictionary. He emphasized that the dictionary would facilitate a deeper understanding of Thailand and Thai culture among Japanese people, thereby, strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

The revised Thai-Japanese dictionary can be purchased at major bookstores or online.
