On 19 September 2023, the Office of Commercial Affairs and the Office of Agricultural Affairs of the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo organized a public relations event to promote Thai mangosteen. The event is held to raise awareness and promote Thai mangosteen among Japanese consumers after the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries allows, with a scientific clarification, the import of Thai mangosteen without vapor heat treatment. This new policy will facilitate the import procedure and avoid exploitation of mangosteen by heat, and therefore, offer more opportunities for Thai mangosteen to expand in the Japanese market and for the Japanese consumers to get cheaper and better quality of the Thai mangosteen.
Welcoming around 40 importers, retailers, department stores, supermarkets and local media, the event not only provided information on production, marketing, and import policies, but also offered fresh mangosteen and mangosteen-based dishes, such as mangosteen salad, for tasting.
On this occasion, H.E. Mr. Singtong Lapisatepun, Ambassador of Thailand to Japan, highlighted that this new policy will give Japanese consumers the opportunity to taste very fresh Thai mangosteen. The Ambassador also stated that mangosteen is, in fact, a symbol of the relationship between Thailand and Japan. In the Sukhothai period, Japan had imported "Mangosteen-shaped incense bowl", a Sangkhalok ceramic ware from Thailand, which is still being used today in Japanese tea ceremonies.
