During 6-9 August 2013, Ambassador Thanatip Upatising and his spouse, Mme Monthip Upatising, visited Gifu Prefecture. Apart from meeting with high-level representatives from public and private sectors, Ambassador also gave a speech on Thailand-Japan economic relations to businesspeople in Gifu and Aichi prefectures in the Regional Conference on Thailand Indonesia in Gifu and the Regional Conference on Thailand and Indonesia in Nagoya. On this occasion, Ambassador paid a courtesy call on Gifu Prefecture’s executives, including Governor Hajime Furuta and Mr. Michihiro Kunishima, Mayor of Takayama City.
On the discussions with Gifu Prefecture Governor and Takayama City Mayor, Ambassador stressed on the long-lasting relation between Thailand and Japan that has developed positively, especially on the exchange between peoples of both countries. Governor Furuta and Mayor Kunishima informed that Thai tourists visiting Gifu Prefecture has increased gradually, especially to Takayama City and the world heritage site, Shirakawa-go. Statistically, the number of Thai tourists visiting Gifu Prefecture in 2012 was over 52,000, while about 35,000 people from this group also visited Takayama City. In fact, the number has immensely increased comparing to the period prior to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
During the seminars, Ambassador emphasized the important role of Japan to Thailand as the largest trading partner and investor and also the importance of exchange between the people of both countries that will expand in the future. Ambassador also welcome investors to further invest in Thailand and use Thailand as the production base to export to other countries in the region. Correspondingly, Ambassador introduced Dawei Special Economic Zone, which the governments of Thailand and Myanmar have co-operated, and invited the Japanese Government to participate in the development of this project. Finally, Ambassador underlined the strength of Thai economy, which has fully recovered from the political unrest and the Great Flood in 2011.
