President of Sake Brewing Society of Okinawa paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador
On 7 November 2018, Mr. Gaku Sakumoto, the President of Sake Brewing Society of Okinawa paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Bansarn Bunnag. Mr. Sakumoto is the president of Suisen Sake Brewery which manufactures Awamori. On this occasion, both sides exchanged views and opinions on how to promote Awamori in the future in both countries. Awamori is distilled liquor made from Thai rice and Thai production method was transfered to Ryukyu from Thailand.

Honorary Consul of Thailand in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador

Mr. Sakumoto has been the Honorary Consul of Thailand in Naha City since 2002. He is the president of the Zuisen Distillery Co., Ltd. which produces Awamori that originated in the Ayutthaya Period in Thailand. In addition, Awamori is the only Japanese alcohol which is made from Thai rice.

2018年8月10日、バンサーン・ブンナーク大使は、首相補佐官及び第2回琉球泡盛輸出促進プロジェクト会議の委員長である宮腰光寛氏の招待を受け、沖縄県で委員長のゲストとして挨拶をしました。
2018年8月10日、バンサーン・ブンナーク大使は、首相補佐官及び第2回琉球泡盛輸出促進プロジェクト会議の委員長である宮腰光寛氏の招待を受け、沖縄県で委員長ゲストとして挨拶をしました。大使は、長い歴史をもつ泡盛の原料であるタイ米の輸出国としてのタイの役割について述べました。約600年もの歴史をもつ泡盛の原料はタイ米です。これは琉球とアユタヤとの貿易から始まりました。このように泡盛は、その頃からの長い歴史をもつタイ日関係を示す重要な証拠となる品物です。海を渡りアユタヤへ赴いた琉球の人々（現在の沖縄県民）はタイの焼酎の作り方を学び、その手法を用いて現在の泡盛を作りました。タイ米の促進については、5月に東京で行われた第19回タイフェスティバルで、大使館は沖縄県の泡盛生産協会と共同ブースで広報支援を行いました。現在、日本は年間228、846トンの米をタイから輸入しています。その内3万トンは、日本の焼酎でタイ米を使用した蒸留酒である泡盛の原料となります。

Nowadays, besides its popularity at Thai food restaurants in Japan, Thai rice is also one of the important ingredients of Japanese cuisine such as, Awamori (alcoholic beverage produced in Okinawa), Senbei (Japanese rice cracker), Shoyu and Miso. Moreover, Ambassador’s Spouse also introduced Thai style Rice ball mixed with Green Curry, Thai Mackerel and Sweet dried fish to the participants.
