Update on Japan-Russia relations

  1. On 22 August 2015, Mr. Dmitry Medvedev, PM of Russia, visited Etorofu Island in the northern territories to attend a political forum of local youth and to inspect the situation of infrastructure development such as harbor and airport facilities and hospitals.

  2. In response, on 22 August 2015, DG Hajime Hayashi of European Affairs Bureau of Japan's MOFA immediately lodged a protest with Mr. Evgeny Ahanasiev, Russian Ambassador to Tokyo, over the visit on the phone. On the same day, upon returning from his constituency in Hiroshima, FM Kishida summoned Amb Ahanasiev to MOFA and directly lodged a protest that the visit was extremely regrettable and it was contrary to the position of Japan and that it hurt the feelings of the Japanese people.
