On 7 November 2018, Mr. Gaku Sakumoto, the President of Sake Brewing Society of Okinawa paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Bansarn Bunnag. Mr. Sakumoto is the president of Suisen Sake Brewery which manufactures Awamori. On this occasion, both sides exchanged views and opinions on how to promote Awamori in the future in both countries. Awamori is distilled liquor made from Thai rice and Thai production method was transfered to Ryukyu from Thailand.

Mr. Sakumoto has been the Honorary Consul of Thailand in Naha City since 2002. He is the president of the Zuisen Distillery Co., Ltd. which produces Awamori that originated in the Ayutthaya Period in Thailand. In addition, Awamori is the only Japanese alcohol which is made from Thai rice.
