On 7 November 2018, Mr. Gaku Sakumoto, the President of Sake Brewing Society of Okinawa paid a courtesy call on Ambassador Bansarn Bunnag. Mr. Sakumoto is the president of Suisen Sake Brewery which manufactures Awamori. On this occasion, both sides exchanged views and opinions on how to promote Awamori in the future in both countries. On the evening of the same day, the Ambassador participated in the Awamori Night at the ANA Crowne Plaza Okinawa Harborview Hotel. The Chairman of the Okinawa Awamori Distillers Association and the Governor also participated in this event. Awamori is an alcohol made from Thai rice using the traditional method, which began production in the Ayutthaya period and it is a symbol of Thailand-Japan relations.

On this occasion, both exchanged views and opinions on bilateral relations; particularly, the preparation for the 130th Japan-Thailand Diplomatic Raltion Anniversary in 2017. They also discussed other events to promote Thailand in Okinawa to enhance trade, investment and tourism between the two countries. Mr. Sakumoto has been the Honorary Consul of Thailand in Naha City since 2002. He is the president of the Zuisen Distillery Co., Ltd. which produces Awamori that originated in the Ayutthaya Period in Thailand. In addition, Awamori is the only Japanese alcohol which is made from Thai rice.

Ambassador also commended the Governor and the citizen of Okinawa for their endeavor to restore and reconstruct Shuri Castle, which was on fire in October 2019, with an aim to be completed by 2026.  The Governor of Okinawa emphasized Okinawa and Thailand’s long relationship through Awamori – a distilled rice liquor which Thai rice is the main ingredient. This makes Okinawa people feel very close to Thai people. The Governor also expressed his gratitude to the Thai side, particularly on the first Thai Expo Okinawa in 2019.  ...

Moreover, Ambassador’s Spouse also introduced Thai style Rice ball mixed with Green Curry, Thai Mackerel and Sweet dried fish to the participants.
